What modern high performance engines would fit into a 78 Trans-am engine bay.?

Looking to buy a 78 Trans am and wondering what options i have to swap the engine. Need something modern like a benz V8 that is high performance but more fuel efficient. Any ideas what might fit in?

With money, tools, a torch and know how any engine/trans combo could probably be fitted. However if you want something that could be done with an available adapter kit thereby making it an easy, economical and eye appealing installation I'd recommend
